Exercise for "1.1 Using the Web" Rubric

This is a multiple part exercise. Write up your answers in a text editor or word processor of your choice, and save your work in an ordinary text file named Ex1.txt  Please complete all parts before submitting the exercise for grading.

Part A: Using any search engine of your choice find URLs for the following:

  1. The home page for three major industrial corporations
  2. The home page for a college or university
  3. The season schedule for a college or professional sports team
  4. The season schedule for a professional arts group (symphony, ballet company, opera company, etc.)
  5. A picture of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.
  6. Find a Web page that, in your opinion, is a well-designed Web pageˇXthat is, one that you like, find interesting, and feel that would attract a lot of "hits". List five things that make this your choice for this part of the exercise.
  7. Find a Web page that is, in your opinion, poorly designed. Include with this URL a list five things that lead you to choose it as a poorly-designed page.

Part B: Pick one of the topics listed below and conduct three searches on that topic, each using a different search engine (the choice is yours). Record the URLs for the top 5 site found by each search (that is, 15 URLs in all).

Topics:

  • stamp collecting
  • model railroading
  • the Golden Gate Bridge

Visit each of the top 5 sites found by each search engine, and then write a brief statement comparing and contrasting the results of the three searches. State which search engine yielded the best results and list the factors that influenced your opinion.
